My friend and I are traveling through Beijing , to Xi'an then a day in Suzhou arriving in morning on overnight train and stopping one night then to Shanghai.
We really fancy getting to Tongli and I would like to know how easy it is to get there from Suzhou. How do we get there, how far is it, how long it would take and roughly the cost. But it would be cool to see some of Suzhou too as it looks interesting. Is there time to view both? Has anyone been to it? My friend has read a lot of books about foot binding and is very interested in seeing historical stuff about it my guide says that there is foot binding artifacts in this museum. Will we come across it in any other museums?
When you arrive suzhou i guess by train right? Take around 40mins to Tongli. You arrive Suzhou in the early morning, visit one garden is enough, the Humble administration garden is interesting. Tongli have the though tickets, visit museum first, then choose one or two gardens is enough,in this watertown you suppose to find three bridges, sorry i can't remember their name.. Sightseeing in Suzhou only in a day is not enough because of looking around Tongli will spend your whole day.
Thank both for the information. I shall be printing the Chinese name for Tongli. Loved the virtual tour of the three bridges on that Tongli website! Here's what I would do. When you arrive, check into your hotel and go to Tongli for as long as you are entertained. The Sex Culture Museum is interesting. The Tongli version is much larger encompassing outdoor sculpture too. Return to Suzhou for whatever time you have left on your first day.
Then, the second day, wake up early and get to the gardens when they open. You will have them all to yourselves, as the tour busses do not arrive for a while with waves of people and very disturbing bullhorns. Then on to the train station for the minute ride to Shanghai. Thank you for giving me the name of Tongli in Chinese. I've just had a thought So please do you know where I can find Suzhou in Chinese letters?
