They have been humiliated, embarrassed and named on a defamatory list for all the world to see. Now the three Cape Town women who discovered their names on MXit's "slut" lists this week are not just livid, they're desperate to find out exactly who tarnished their reputations.

Some are harmless, listing the names of the "50 hottest hunks in Durban" while others such as the "slut list" and "bastard list" maliciously shame boys and girls. The "slut list" alleges rampant promiscuity by the women named, while the "bastard list" tarnishes the reputations of its male victims.
Last week MXit urged victims to go to the police. They said they would assist authorities in finding the culprits who started the defamatory lists and an example will be made of those found to be guilty. Another Cape Town woman, a customer service representative, said she was shocked when she first saw the "slut list". They list my nickname, but a couple of my friends are on the list as well.
